The company was founded in 1991 originally as TotalCare and began as a subsidiary of Manor Care, a major U.S. operator of healthcare facilities and nursing homes.
Key Acquisition in 1997: Omnicare, Inc. a dominant leader in the U.S. institutional pharmacy sector initiated an acquisition in 1997, finalizing its takeover of Vitalink Pharmacy Services in early 1998. This move further solidified Omnicare’s position as the undisputed leader in the U.S. long-term care pharmacy market.
Omnicare, the parent company that acquired Vitalink, was itself acquired in 2015 by CVS Health the largest U.S. pharmacy chain and a healthcare giant in a deal valued at approximately $12.7 billion. Consequently, the business network originally developed by Vitalink was ultimately integrated into the broader CVS Health ecosystem.
